Hello, . My name is Terri Hudson. I am Hearing Impaired. There is something I like to share with you. First about my life. My parents didn't know I have a hearing poblem until I was four years old. They find that I was born Serve Hearing Loss . . My mother had a german measles before I was born. I wear two hearing aids which does help me hear better.
What is deafness and hearing impaired? Hearing loss is extremely common and can present at any time from infancy to old age. About 1 in 1000 infants has profound hearing impairment, with half thought to be of genetic orgin. Many deafness genes exist, but the most common cause of hearing loss in American and European populations is a mutation in the connexin 26 (CX26) gene. Cx26 has a carrier rate of 3% similar to that for cystic fibrosis, and it causes about 20% of childhood deafness. There are millions of hearing imparied or hard of hearing people in US. The hard of hearing withdraw from social life. This is reinforced by social rejection of the deaf and hearing impaired. There are several reasons for a hearing loss. The most common cause for hearing loss at birth are maternal rubella, Trauma at birth, other complications of pregnancy; Heredity, prematurity, and RH incompatabity. Rubella is viral disease. It cause congenital deafness. Rubella,or german measles, caused serve hearing loss or total deafness. The most common cause of hearing loss after birth are Meningitis, high fever, mumps, infections, measles, encephalitis, Meniere's disease, and tramua after birth. Diseases of the inner ear produce hearing loss. There are two major types of hearing loss, Conductive discorders and sensori-neural discorders. Conductive discorder result from interference with the transmission of sound through the outer ear or the middle ear. Disease cause most conductive hearing loss. The leading cause of such discorder is otitis media. Infection of the middle ear. In Otitis media a common cold or some other infection spreads to the middle ear and cause it to fill with fluid. The pressure of this fluid reduces the abitity of the eardrum and ossicles to transmit vibrations. Otitis of the eardrum and ossicles to transmit vibrations. Otitis media occurs most commonly during early childhood and can lead to serious hearing loss if treated promptily. Sensori-neural hearing loss cannot be treated. It involves some defect in the ear or autitory nerve, which leads from the inner ear to the brain. The inner ear contains or organ called the corti. THis organ convents the vibrations transmitted to the inner ear into electrical impulses which the auditory nerve carries to the brain. Damage to any of these celicate tissues can be caused by a wide variety of factors and it cannot be repaired. There are four classifications of nerve damage hearing loss: Mild, moderate, severe, and profound. People with mild hearing loss do not hear the sounds of Z,V,P,N,G,K,S,F,T, Th,Sh,CH and miss parts of words. In the word Boy, for example, the B would not be heard. People with moderate hearing loss hear spoken words, mostly the consonant sounds except for J,M,D,B,I. SOmetimes they can hear someone speaks to them even if they are not facing the speaker. People with severe hearing loss (That's me) Do not hear any of spoken sounds of the alphabet unless they wear hearing aids. These people have trouble understanding spoken and written langauge. If they do not face the speaker, They will not hear the sound of the speaker's voice unless he/she is shouting. People who hear no sounds at all. Deaf people have a hearing loss. Some types of hearing loss can be helped amplification such as hearing aids. A hearing aids only makes sounds louder. It does not make them clear. Hearing aids do not amplify the sounds a person cannot hear to begin with. A hearing aids does not correct the hearing loss. Most hearing impaired people use a hearing aid. The first kind of hearing aid was the hand cupped behind the ear to trap the sound and sent it into the ear. (This is what I wears them.) Then the mechanical hearing aid with a large scoop to trap acoustic energy was made. The old ear trumpet was a mechanical hearing device. Early hearing aids were large and easily seen.
The small modern hearing aid is designed to give a louder sound from a very small receiver connected by a very short wire to the amphifer. It converts sounds to electrical energy, amphifies the energy, and then changes the energy back into sounds. The energy for the modern electric hearing aids comes batteries. The molded earpiece is part of all air conducted hearing aids. It is plastic flesh-tinted that is comfortably formed to fit in the ear. A receiver is the inverse function of a microphone. It transform an electric imput from the hearing aid amplifer into accoustic output. An electrical hearing aids is a miniature telephone. An electric hearing aid is kind of like a telephone or public address system where there is a talker using a microphone and a listener who uses a receiver. The listener can adjust overall gain (increase in sound level)with a volume control. Some hearing aids have a telephone pick-up switch which picks up the telephone signal and amplifies it through the hearing aid. Modern techinology lets hearing impaired students use a an amplification susten such as the PHONIC EAR. and the personal FM system so that they hear the teacher's voice or the voices of other speakers. In groups hearing aida are used for deaf and heaing impaired in churches,in meeting, and theatres. ( I wore that when I was in Fifth thru twelveth grade.)
Because the hearing aid amplifies only the sounds a person can hear, many people who use a hearing aid also use lip reading and manual communition to help them communicate with others. Lip reading or speech reading are skills that enable hearing impaired adn deaf to understand the language used by a speaker, Intent watching of the movements of the speaker's lips is required for successful lip reading. Not all speech sounds can be seen on the lips. Many words look alike on the lips. There are several "homophenous" (Look alike on the lips) " Letters including /p,b,m,/; /f,v,/ and /t,n,s,k,g,/ fingerspelling, sign language and cued speech are ways used to help hearing impaired to clarify spoken language. In fingerspelling,the manual alphabet is used to represent each letter and words are spelled letter by letter. In version of sign language ( I do signs)word conbitations and words are signed. Cued speech is used to make all syllables look different. " Cued speech, the lip-teeth-tongue supply about 2/3 of the information required to identify the syllables. and the hand supples the remainer.
Another way hard of hearing and deaf communities is through interpeters who have a knowledge of signs used by deaf and hard of hearing. Interpeters must have good knowledge of English, subjects, respect and poise. In the classroom interpeters translate what the teacher's say so the deaf can understand what the teacher are talking about. If the deaf student has a question to ask, he signs to the interpeter and the interpeter asks the teacher and then the teacher repeats the answer. There are some other ways that deaf and hearing impaired use to understand and to live independently. Deaf and hard of hearing can enjoy the music by the vibrations. Closed captions Television programs (All TV should have CC On it.) are helpful for deaf and hearing impaired to understand when there is talking on the TV. Telephones can have amplifies in the receivers (I have it in my phone) The TTY is kind of a typewriter that the hard of hearing or deaf can type on, have his message sent over the telephone to a screen where it can be read by a deaf or hard of hearing person. Doorbells and telephones, when they rings, can flash a light that the deaf or hearing impaired can see/hear. There are dogs that are trained to be hearing ear dogs. The dogs hear the doorbell or alarm or telephone and tell the deaf or hearing impaired person.
It is easier now for deaf or hearing impaired. Ways have been learned to help them speak and to understand. Technology in hearing today is more helpful for deaf and hearing impaired than it was in the days of the old ear trumpet
